The Structural Systems program introduces students to the world of architecture, construction, and skilled trades through hands-on, project-based learning. Students learn how buildings are designed, planned, and constructed while gaining practical experience with tools, safety practices, and the fundamentals of construction. This pathway prepares learners for high-demand careers across Tennessee, including carpentry, roofing, construction management, and engineering.
Beginning as early as 8th grade, students can enroll in the Level 1 course at HMMS, allowing them to earn high school credit while exploring the full construction process—from reading blueprints and measuring materials to understanding structural design and completing real-world build projects. As students progress, they can earn industry-recognized certifications such as NCCER and OSHA 10, and work with community and industry partners for advanced learning opportunities.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA, a leadership organization that provides local, state, and national competitions where learners build technical, workplace, and personal skills for future success.
If you enjoy building things, solving problems, or learning how structures come together, the Structural Systems pathway offers a strong foundation for careers in construction and architecture.
